I originally bought one of these adapters in 2007 for one simple reason, I did not like the overhead design of the Original Microsoft headset that came with my Xbox, and if I bought a new one, I wanted the volume and mute controls by the controller instead of the headset wire.
I researched online first, for a 2.5mm headset that I could like. I found this
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Under-Ear-Headset/dp/B001S48UHW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1284937311&sr=8-1-spell
I really like this headset, although the controls (like most) are on the wire, not very easy to use whilst in a fire fight right?
Then I searched for "Xbox adapter" on Amazon and found this adapter I'm reviewing. It seemed to fit my needs, and at the time was .99, free shipping. I have been using it ever since (still do) and have not had any major problems.
I rarely write reviews simply because most products have enough people doing it for my input to make much of an impact. But I saw that this product had so many negative reviews for what I think are the wrong reasons that I had to give my two cents.
Reviews that include:
"Please avoid this product unless all you are looking for is the splitter"
- DUH, if you are looking for a splitter, buy a splitter...
"I own several 2.5mm jack headsets from various major brands (Panasonic, Plantronics, etc...) and this product will not work with them."
- Yes, this adapter does work with Panasonic and Plantronics products, maybe not the ones the reviewer used, but still, it does (i.e.) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007M1TZ/ref=oss_product
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANOY7M/ref=oss_product
"after realizing that i needed a 2.5mm plug (not standard) i wasted an additional 6 dollars at radio shack, to buy an adapter for my adapter"
- Um, if you bought this an YOUR headset doesn't fit, that's your fault, this adapter wasn't designed to accommodate 3.5mm headsets.
"I ordered this adapter for Tritton Headset connection to PS3. Apparently, this is the adapter for XBox360"
- WOW, if you ordered this adapter for a PS3 accessory, and are surprised it didn't work &/or needed to return it, that is your fault for not checking the return policy and a bad review on an otherwise good product is just lame.
There are some draw backs to this device, as with any.
1. Compared to the original headset from Microsoft, yes this adapter does seem a tiny bit loose, not falling out loose, just, you can move it a bit.
2. Yes the volume dial is harder to turn than others, not that is a defect, just maybe poor design.
Then there are the positives, which make this adapter, under I'd say, a good buy:
1. This allows you to have volume controls and mute switch on the base of the controller.
2. And you can use many many 2.5 mm headsets, for cellphones, home phones, pc and regular Xbox. With your Xbox 360.
All in all this product feels a tad cheap, but then again, it is intec...
