I am a previous owner of Turtle beach x4's and more recently the x41. I decided to get rid of them because there was way to much interference. I have a Plasma TV and Plasma TV's use the same analog RF as the X4's transmitter, and you get a lot of interference. Even when I wouldn't get interference from my TV, if u move slightly out of range you just get horrible noises, cutouts, and very loud Pops! Wasn't very enjoyable and hard to recommend them at all.
Ive also recently tried the new X41's that use the digital RF that isn't suppose to have any interference from Plasma's. Well yeah that's complete garbage. It wasn't as bad or noticeable as it was with the x4's, but still had bad cutouts and sound problems. I did have a couple nights where i could actually do some decent gaming without problems, but all in all i had more cut outs and just hassles with them than the 4's.
Anyhow moving on to the AX720 headset. Because of all the problems i had with the wireless, I wanted to get the best wired headset i could find. I did a lot of research and came to the decision on the 720's. They had amazing reviews and I heard nothing but good things. I'm glad i bought them because they don't disappoint, but they don't "Wow" me either. My biggest set back with the 720's is the SIMULATED SURROUND SOUND. Basically they use two speakers and try to imitate 5.1. Ive been using the X4 and 41's for over a year now, and if you can get them to actually work and not make horrible sounds and noises and crackling, the sound quality is FAR superior over the 720's. But good luck with that.. Seriously...
The sound quality isn't bad at all on the 720's. They are a good sounding headset for casual gaming, watching TV, or a movie. The volume gets plenty loud, and they are crystal clear with when u are playing a game or watching a movie with Dolby Digital.
To wrap this up, I can easily and highly recommend these for any hardcore or casual gamer, BUT If you are a professional gamer or just someone wanting to have the best edge over the competition, keep looking. Also, If you are like me and used to the sound quality that the X4 and x41's provide when they work correctly, you will be slightly dissapointed. Its definitely taking a step backwards. That's the only reason i gave them a 4 star and not 5. Although they do a great job of simulating 5.1 surround sound, its still not the same and you lose an edge.
Do yourself a favor though, stay away from turtle beach if possible! I bought the X4 and 41's when they were released, nothing but a big waste of money and frustration. Some of the best sounding headphones, when they work right...
